Local Government
The City Commission is a legislative body of policy-makers; the members are elected from each of the three wards. The City Manager is appointed by the Commission to serve as the City's chief administrator. The Mayor is elected by the City at large. All elected officials serve staggered four-year terms.

The City of Grand Rapids is the second largest city in Michigan.

Water and Sewer
Lake Michigan supplies 100% of the City’s water needs. The City of Grand Rapids Water System treats roughly 50 Million Gallons of water from Lake Michigan per day. Air Transportation
The Gerald R. Ford International Airport services 120 flights per day to and from 24 major cities. Six passenger airlines operate out of this airport.

Rail freight service is provided by Conrail, Grand Rapids Eastern Railroad and CSX; passenger service is provided by Amtrak.

A force of 282 Uniformed Officers and 84 Civilian employees provide police protection for the City. The Police Department handles approximately 150,000 calls for service a year. More information regarding the Grand Rapids Police Department can be found by clicking here.
